Redesigning a reference financial tool without losing the precision professionals depend on.
The Market Calculator is a reference tool used across the Dominican capital market to evaluate fixed-income instruments through prices, yields, traded amounts and projected cash flows. The challenge was to modernize an established product while preserving the accuracy and trust expected from a professional financial tool.

01 Context
More than a calculator
The Market Calculator sits inside a professional financial workflow. Market participants use it to evaluate scenarios around fixed-income instruments and translate variables such as yield, price, nominal value and settlement into values and cash flows they can work with.
Its importance created a particular design constraint: this was not a new product that could be reinvented without consequence. Users already depended on the calculator and understood its financial logic. The opportunity was to improve the experience around that logic without compromising the familiarity, precision or credibility of the tool.

02 The legacy experience
An established tool with accumulated friction
The previous calculator had become familiar to its users, but familiarity did not eliminate its usability problems. Navigation issues, broken or inconsistent functionality and opportunities for new capabilities had accumulated around an experience that needed to evolve.
Because the underlying financial calculations were already trusted, the redesign could not simply replace everything that existed. The work required separating the product's essential financial logic from the interaction problems that had grown around it.

03 Understanding the users
Starting with how professionals actually used the tool
Before redesigning the experience, I spoke directly with users of the existing calculator to understand how the tool fit into their work, which parts created friction and what they needed from a new version.
The conversations helped separate cosmetic issues from problems that affected the actual workflow. They also provided context for deciding which parts of the existing experience should remain familiar, which interactions needed to change and where new capabilities could provide meaningful value.
The objective was not to redesign the product around theoretical users. It was to understand how an established financial tool was already being used and improve it from that reality.

The goal was not to simplify the finance. It was to simplify the interaction around it.
04 Design direction
Preserving complexity without creating unnecessary friction
A professional financial calculator cannot hide the variables that determine its results. Yield, price, nominal value, traded amount and settlement all matter.
The design challenge was therefore not to remove complexity indiscriminately. It was to establish a clearer relationship between what users provide, what the system calculates and what they need to interpret next.
The redesigned experience separates the interaction into a more explicit progression: identify the instrument, define the calculation scenario, calculate, interpret the results and explore the resulting cash flows.

05 Defining the scenario
Making the calculation state explicit
The calculation begins by establishing the instrument and the variables that define the scenario. Rather than treating these values as a collection of unrelated fields, the redesigned interface groups them as the inputs that determine the calculation state.
This creates a clearer boundary between what the user controls and what the system returns, making it easier to understand why the results change when a variable is adjusted.

06 Interpreting the result
Turning a calculation into information that can be used
Calculating a value is only part of the job. The result needs to expose enough financial context for professionals to understand the scenario they just created.
The results area brings instrument information and calculated values together so users can move from input to interpretation without losing context. Key outputs such as yield, clean price, dirty price, traded amount and accrued coupon are presented alongside the security information that gives those values meaning.

07 Beyond the result
Making the instrument's future visible
For fixed-income analysis, the headline result is not the end of the experience. Professionals also need visibility into how the instrument behaves through time.
The redesigned calculator keeps projected coupon and cash-flow information connected to the calculation result, allowing users to move from a single pricing scenario into the sequence of payments behind it.

08 Validation
Validating the redesign with the people who depended on it
The redesigned experience was validated with key users before becoming the new product experience.
Validation was especially important because usability improvements could not come at the expense of financial understanding. Changes needed to make the calculator easier to navigate while preserving the terminology, relationships and outputs professionals expected from the tool.
Feedback from these validation cycles informed refinements before implementation was finalized.

09 Responsive experience
Taking a desktop financial tool beyond the desktop
The redesign also introduced a responsive experience. Adapting a dense financial tool to smaller screens required more than shrinking the desktop interface: input priority, reading order and the relationship between calculation and results had to remain understandable as the available space changed.

10 From design to code
Closing the gap between the interface and the product
My involvement continued into front-end implementation. Translating the redesigned calculator into production meant working with the actual financial inputs, outputs and backend behavior rather than designing an isolated representation of the experience.
That proximity to implementation helped evaluate design decisions against real product constraints and ensured that the final interface remained aligned with the experience that had been validated with users.

11 Outcome
Modernizing the experience without losing what made the tool valuable
The redesigned calculator became the new public experience for a reference tool in the Dominican capital market, addressing usability and navigation limitations while introducing a more modern, responsive way to work with the same financial rigor users depended on.
For me, the project reinforced an important lesson about redesigning professional tools: progress does not always mean reducing complexity. Sometimes the better experience comes from preserving the complexity users actually need while removing the friction they do not.
